Under Construction

Updated: Jan 4

One of our goals is to have a large, easily accessible pig area. Recently, we made several updates to the pig pens. These changes not only improve the pigs’ well-being but also make daily care easier and more efficient.

Our Scratching Post

We were finally able to install our scratching post! This is a 6ft x 1 ft log wrapped in burlap and rope. The rope in soaked in oil and sulfur. The hope is that they will use this post to help keep their hair and skin moisturized while also deterring skin parasites. Currently, however, they are only interested in ripping the rope off!

Farrowing and Grow Out Pens

Our previous farrowing pen was a fenced off corner of the shelter. This was inconvenient for many reasons. We expanded the pig pen so it now has two separate farrowing areas that are almost fulling fenced and will eventually have gates. This allows us to separate the mother earlier and provide a quiet area away from the other sows to birth her piglets. We can then easily transition the mother back to the herd, while keeping the piglets close to her while they grow. Ken is making gravel walk ways for us and a nice loading shoot to go with it all.
